Learning English happens wherever and whenever you hear it and see it. It is best practiced with other people, but sometimes there isnt an English speaker around. What can you do? You can read, listen to music or podcasts, and you can watch movies or short video clips, with or without subtitles. My experience and study have convinced me that language learning requires three things:

  1. Exposure through listening and reading
  2. Attention to the way the language works
  3. Interaction with people who use the language

You can get the first two of these with the help of a computer. Click on the links at the top of this page to see my favorites. But there's nothing like interacting with real people to learn regional expressions, body language, and cultural expectations. Even more important, people (for the most part) make more interesting conversational partners than computers do.
